"Insomnia"

About good

"The beginning" is a perfect summer blockbuster. Incredibly high expectations associated with the name of the Director, the cast, where everyone is talented, an unusual plot — the film has everything not only for high fees, but also for high ratings (audience and professional), which were as natural and expected as the profit of the creators.

I liked the film, it makes me Crouch in a chair, wait for another unexpected plot twist, follow the logic of the story, trying not to miss the slightest plot detail. I watched this movie on the new site for free and without registration - https://www.01234-movies.com

The professionalism and ambition of Christopher Nolan struck me here much more than before. He didn't just create a whole concept for this movie, but also wrote in an interesting story about the introduction of an idea into the mind of the heir to a megacorporation by a group of specialists led by Cobb, who has his own skeletons in the closet and a sad experience in implementing the idea. I do not want to go into the details of the plot, it is the basis of the film, the main component of the impression after viewing.

About the bad

Why is there a neutral review? It's very simple, I learned to evaluate Nolan's films not immediately after viewing, but after a while, when the "WOW"effect passes and the understanding comes that the film has its drawbacks. That this is not a masterpiece or a new word in cinema, as many write. Moreover, the disadvantages did not take long to look for — they are all old and familiar and are present in most of the Director's films. He likes psychological motives, but they turn out to be bad, strained, lifeless, although as logical as possible. The main idea of the film boils down to the fact that reality is more important than sleep, reality is the goal for the main character, who realized this late and now he will have to fight with his subconscious in a dream for the sake of the future. Here is only in the film so little real and so much dream, very beautifully and logically constructed, that I doubt the sincerity of the Director. The film makes us love that alternate reality, its purpose is to entertain us with multi-level dreams, so why is the audience deceived at the end and told that it is bad? Now about dreams. I'm sure there are people who don't see them at all, such as Christopher Nolan. In a dream, the subconscious mind completely takes over the mind, it sometimes gives out things that are just hard to imagine. What do we see in the film? Absolutely controlled collective dream, created by the architect (of course they called it that for nothing) in the urban environment, where the subconscious is some kind of projection with automata. An odd assumption for a key point in the concept. This is not a dream, this is some kind of Matrix, an alternate reality.

Romantic moments in Nolan's films never appeared, and that the characters have feelings we learn from a few of their words, no more.

A strong complication can not go to the benefit of style, as it seems to me, suffers from this. Some action in the film is clearly superfluous (the third level of sleep), time could be spent on working out the characters, they are revealed weakly.

Result

The Director showed the world what he is capable of (and what he is not capable of). High budgets and a very wide audience put pressure on anyone and we are unlikely to see anything new that can be compared to "Remember". I was pleasantly pleased with some of his findings — the constantly sounding Edith Piaf and finally justified slo-mo, but the film has shortcomings and we must admit it. It remains now to wait for the time when the tops will start to fall and the reality will really interest the audience. Then the movie will catch up.
